Saucer Magnolia (Magnolia x soulangeana)
This magnolia was growing in a brick planter and had a number of perfectly straight, very tall sprouts that were catching lots of wind in the winter. The goal here was to improve the tree's structure and decrease the likelihood of breakage/uprooting in high wind events -- trees growing in planters are much more susceptible to uprooting than they would otherwise be because their roots aren't able to spread out. To accomplish these goals I reduced the overall height of the tree back to appropriately sized lateral branches, and selectively removed some of the crowded vertical sprouts to give those remaining space to grow.
